Cathedral Rock, Sedona, Arizona N 34° 49.436' W 111° 48.029' This photograph of Cathedral Rock was taken outside of Sedona, Arizona. Cathedral Rock is located in the Verde Valley in north central Arizona, a high desert region along the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau. The formation of Sedona's famous red rocks began a mere 500 million years ago when the ebb and flow of oceans and powerful volcanic activity deposited several layers of different minerals throughout the Colorado Plateau. The most prominent mineral layer seen in Cathedral Rock is the deep red sandstone rich in deposits of iron. About 2 million years ago wind and water went to work, carving out the unusual spires, buttes and mesas seen in the region today.
