2009 Kentucky Winter Ice Storm : The 2009 Kentucky Winter Ice Storm, which began Jan. 27, was the largest weather disaster in Kentucky history, leaving over 769,000 without power and attributed to 36 deaths. Some 101 counties and 75 cities have declared states of emergency, and President Barack Obama has issued a major disaster declaration for the state. Preliminary disaster assessments totaled $115 million; there were 987,810 meals, 1.9 million liters of water, 500 cots and 1,000 blankets delivered to victims. 220 shelters served 7,009 people at the storm's peak. In addition, 4,900 miles of roadway were affected by the storm. Emergency management agencies in 10 other states helped out and 25 volunteer organizations from 15 states offered help.

Medical Center EMS Unit 604 : Photographs of Medical Center EMS Unit 604, broadsided by a dump truck carrying hot asphalt on Oct. 31, 2008. The ambulance was not on a run at the time, and the photographs were taken after the vehicles were removed from the scene. The EMT driving the ambulance was treated at the hospital and released. The paramedic in the passenger seat was flown by Air Methods Kentucky to Vanderbilt, where he remains on Nov. 6 in critical condition. While our thoughts and prayers are with the patients and their families, friends, and co-workers, we believe these photographs to have educational merit and they may be copied and used for educational purposes only.
